The Houses We Create

What comes to mind when you think about your house?

Is it a place, a building, the space where you once grew up?

And if that space is gone, what defines a house then?

Perhaps a house is more than a structure, it’s a fragment of who we are. When displacement erases the familiar, we learn that home can be found in unexpected places, it is a feeling we learn to recognise in the eyes of a loved one, in a scent, touch, colour. Home can be held by the sea that connects all waters, by the moon that remains constant no matter where you stand. It is a feeling we keep finding, remaking, and carrying within us.  

The Houses We Create invites you to answer the question: How do you create your House?

Curated by Plazuli, the exhibition The Houses We Create features 21 emerging and renowned creative practitioners who construct their own sense of a house, especially in cases when traditional ideas of place, nation or permanence are disrupted. The artists reinterpret the question in sensible and personal ways, implementing diverse techniques and mediums like painting, sculpture and installation among others. Practitioners from international backgrounds explore houses as emotional, symbolic or imagined spaces and question the notion of belonging.
